LEXINGTON – Warren Central boys’ basketball coach William Unseld opened the postgame news conference following the Dragons’ 66-62 win over Madisonville-North Hopkins addressing a tweet Thursday that listed the team’s eight transfers.
A visibly upset Unseld spoke for 3½ minutes, saying the tweet from Courier Journal sports writer Jason Frakes – which listed the eight players and the school they attended last year – was disrespectful to his team.
“We had a big win yesterday (against Mayfield), a big win and we had a reporter tweet out we’ve got eight transfers,” Unseld said. “Eight transfers, without knowing the background of the situation – with an insinuation, accusation that we did something. My thing is, if you think that happened, go figure it out.”
Unseld went on to say only two of the kids played varsity last year and the other six were junior varsity kids who barely had any minutes. Warren Central’s eight transfers are Kobe Brents, Kris Horn, Dre Boyd, Kamden Lawrence, Geovonni Floyd, Antonio Barbee, Dennis Freeman and Jessie Wright.
“We have a school that is transient,” Unseld said. “People move in and move out. A couple of them actually went to Warren Central before or our middle school. They moved out and moved back.”
Unseld added that some of the kids aren’t there by choice and are in tough situations he wouldn’t comment on. He did mention Brents transferred after his mother lost her teaching job in Glasgow and got another job at Warren Elementary.
Unseld concluded his comments by re-emphasizing how he believed the tweet took away from the moment after Thursday’s win.
“It upsets me that someone would tweet that out after we win,” Unseld said. “It shows a level of disrespect for our program. To put it out there after a special moment is unbelievable. Without knowing the facts. Know the facts of the matter.
“They all went through the process and they all got ruled eligible.”
