A preliminary investigation determined that Richard S. Gray, 57, of Lansing, Mich., was driving a westbound 2019 Freightliner semitruck when he crossed the centerline into the path of oncoming traffic.

The semi struck the rear trailer of an eastbound 2015 Freightliner commercial vehicle that Mihail Strungav, 33, of New Orleans was driving.

Strungav’s Freightliner was the first of three vehicles Gray’s truck hit, the others being a 2004 Ford Econoline van driven by William D. Johnson, 47, of Louisville, and a 2018 Nissan pickup operated by Seth T. Arterburn, 26, of Cave City.

The Barren County Coroner’s Office declared Gray dead at the scene.

Strungav did not report any injuries at the scene. Johnson was taken to Vanderbilt University Hospital, where he died from his injuries about 4:54 p.m. Latoya P. Britton, 44, a passenger in Johnson’s vehicle, was treated and released from TJ Samson Community Hospital, along with Arterburn.

On the scene, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Barren/Metcalfe Emergency Medical Services, the Cave City Police Department and the Barren County Coroner’s Office assisted. Priddy is leading the investigation.
