Berg, Wahlberg collaboration stalls with “Mile 22”

Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg have developed a nice little collaboration with Berg directing Wahlberg in “Lone Survivor,” “”Deepwater Horizon” and “Patriots Day,” so its no surprise the duo have paired up for a fourth time with “Mile 22.”

The fourth time is definitely not a charm however, with “Mile 22” being the weakest Berg/Wahlberg film yet. “Mile 22” does have a few well-staged action sequences but the rest is rather clunky – resulting in a film that feels pretty bloated even at only 95 minutes.

Unlike the previous three films, which were based on true stories, “Mile 22” is an original story with Wahlberg playing an eccentric CIA officer named James Silva whose latest assignment involves transporting an asset named Li Noor (Iko Uwais) to safety in exchange for critical intelligence involving enemies of the United States.

The transportation gets complicated when people who want the asset terminated sabotage the convoy, leaving Silva and his team scrambling to protect Li Noor and complete the mission.

“Mile 22” begins with a pretty solid action sequence, but the film quickly goes downhill from there Lea Carpenter’s screenplay tries to give Wahlberg’s character a backstory. His character quirks, which includes snapping a rubber band on his wrist when he gets nervous and being over-the-top abrasive, grow quite tiresome. Wahlberg has the ability as an actor, especially in films like this, but his character comes off like a bad offspring of Dirk Diggler here.

Lauren Cohan from TV’s “The Walking Dead” is the only other person who gets a backstory (She’s a divorced mom trying to get home to her kid). Cohan does wind up being the most sympathy character in “Mile 22,” but her story gets pushed aside to allow more Wahlberg (which is clearly the wrong choice).

You also get John Malkovich and Rhonda Rousey in small roles, but they really don’t get much to do as the body count and bloodshed mounts.

“Mile 22” does at least end on a high note, a nice bookend to the opening sequence, but by that point the audience will likely check out – bored by a film that offers little more beyond the first and last scene.
