After opening with more than 600 students last week, work continues on Jennings Creek Elementary School to complete the school’s gym and cafeteria.

Warren County Public Schools’ board of education heard an update on the school’s progress during a meeting Thursday.

Architects with Lexington-based firm Sherman Carter Barnhart said the school’s kitchen could be completed after Labor Day, along with the parent drop-off in the back of the school. They expect the school’s gym and cafeteria, which doubles as an auditorium, to be finished shortly after fall break.

Architect Justin McElfresh said workers have started installing wiring for the bleachers in the gymnasium, referencing photographs from the work site.

“There’s also been a great deal of work going on in the cafeteria,” he said, adding that a freezer and cooler unit has been installed. Duct work is also being installed within the cafeteria.

Work is also continuing with a $30 million energy savings project that’s adding energy-efficient lighting, heating and cooling systems and other facility upgrades.

Over the course of nine weeks this summer, workers installed a new roof on Warren Elementary School, a new energy-saving geothermal HVAC system at Greenwood High School and other improvements.

About 70 percent of the overall project has been completed. Lost River Elementary and Warren East High schools are next in line for renovations expected to start next month.

The board also approved plans for a new roof for Rockfield Elementary School, which is experiencing roof leaks. The district hopes to put out bids and begin work by mid-October.

After announcing plans to step down from the board in June, board member Don Basham said the meeting will likely be one of his last. He’s in his 14th year on the board.

“It’s been a real privilege to serve here in the county, and I’m sure there will be another person who comes on this board that will do even better,” he said.

Board chairman Kerry Young and board member Amy Duvall are running with no opposition in November. A seat vacated by board member Becky Evans in May will be filled by an appointment from Interim Education Commissioner Wayne Lewis after a filing deadline passed Tuesday with no candidates filing.

Young anticipated that the board will remain a three-person board until January because of annual training requirements board members must comply with.
