Mixon, Claycomb struggle in first round of U.S. Junior Am

Bowling Green locals Canon Claycomb and C.M. Mixon have plenty of ground to make up after the first day of the U.S. Junior Amateur on Monday at Baltusrol Golf Club.

Mixon, a rising South Warren senior, shot 6-over par 78 to finish the first round tied for 101st. The Bowling Green native Claycomb shot 3-over to end the day tied for 51st and eight shots off the lead.

Claycomb shot four bogeys and birdied No. 18 for his 75. Mixon double-bogeyed his first hole and couldn’t recover on the lower course in Springfield, N.J.

Mixon teed off at 6:45 a.m. in the second round Tuesday. Claycomb started his second day at 8:09 a.m.
