John Myers is stepping down as head football coach at Russellville High School after 14 years.

Myers, who also worked as the Russellville Independent Schools transportation director and facilities and maintenance supervisor, will take on a similar role with Glasgow Independent Schools.

His wife, Jennifer Myers, is the principal at Highland Elementary School in Glasgow.

“Any time you’ve been at a place for 14 seasons, it’s a very difficult decision to leave,” Myers told the Daily News in a phone interview Saturday. “It was time. It’s going to be the best thing for me and the best thing for Russellville. Overall, it’s a great situation that I’m in. My family is there and it only makes sense.

“I’m going to miss Russellville. They’ve been tremendous to me and I’ve been very fortunate to have some tremendous players and coaches and worked for a tremendous administration. I couldn’t have asked for anything more during my time at Russellville. I have been blessed beyond measure.”

Myers was 118-57 in 14 seasons of coaching the Panthers. He coached four seasons at Monroe County before taking over at Russellville in 2004.

The Panthers earned double-digit wins in three of the last five seasons with back-to-back Class A semifinal appearances in 2015 and 2016.

Russellville went 7-5 this season and lost to Campbellsville in the second round of the playoffs.

Myers said he has “no desire” to be a head coach right now, but said he would entertain an assistant coaching position if the opportunity arose.

“We’re going to see how that goes,” Myers said. “It was definitely a time for change from being a head coach. I’ve been a head coach for 18 years and when you’ve done it that long, sometimes it wears on you and you need to recharge the batteries and have a change of scenery. As far as coaching in the future goes, that’s still a possibility.”
