The Warren East football team christened its new field in style, blanking Warren Central 49-0 on Friday at Jim Ross Field.

Playing at home for the first time this season, Warren East (3-6 overall, 1-2 Class 4A, District 2) got 263 total yards from Chauncey Greer to win on the opening night for its new facility and clinch a spot in the postseason after missing the playoffs last year.

“It was nice to get home, get back here and have a routine,” Warren East coach Justin Chaffin said. “A lack of routine has been frustrating from this old man’s perspective, but getting able to come home and have the ability to have a home game with a great crowd and new facility was a really fun night.”

After fumbling at the goal line on the opening drive, the Raiders got on the board with a 9-yard keeper from quarterback Greer midway through the second period.

Warren East quickly extended the lead to 21-0 by halftime, converting back-to-back onside kicks into touchdowns. The first score came on a 21-yard fade pass into the right corner of the end zone from Greer to Caleb Huskey, with Trevor Naftel’s 10-yard touchdown run capping the scoring drive after the second onside kick.

“I give (Warren Central) a lot of credit with their game plan,” Chaffin said. “They came out here and tried to take the air out of it. They had the ball the whole first quarter, so I felt like we had to do something to jump start our team and our special teams did a great job of executing that.”

Greer added a second touchdown run just over a minute into the third period and, after a third onside kick, Patrick Satterfield’s touchdown run and two-point conversion made it 36-0 to force the KHSAA mandated running clock with 9:35 left in the third.

Greer, who transferred from Warren Central before the season, added an 11-yard touchdown run late in the third period and Thomas Maxey capped the scoring with a touchdown run in the fourth period.

“This was the first focused week we’ve had in practice,” Greer said. “Our o-line had a good week. Our receivers had a good week. We came out and put everything on the line.”

Greer added that there was a little extra spice playing his former teammates.

“You can’t keep it personal,” Greer said. “After the game it is all love. We are still brothers. It is just how it is.”

Greer, who entered Friday averaging 219 yards a game passing, was held to 108 yards in the air, but finished with 155 yards rushing and three scores. The Raiders outgained Warren Central (0-8, 0-3) 382-47 with 274 yards on the ground.

“They are playing a 3-2 box and triple teaming both sides, we have to run the ball,” Chaffin said. “I don’t get frustrated, but everybody is starting to tilt coverage towards Patrick now. He’s got such a great attitude. I told him, ‘I know you didn’t get many touches, but you are the reason we could put up those kind of points tonight because of what teams have to do to adjust to you.”

D.J. Tyner had 51 yards rushing for Warren Central.

“(The onside kicks) are straight away turnovers,” Warren Central coach Joel Taylor said. “Football is a game of momentum. I don’t think they caused those balls to be jarred loose. When you just give that stuff away, a good team is going to capitalize and that is exactly what Warren East did. They are a good football team. If you give them the ball at the 40-yard line, they are going to score. They’ve got too many athletes.”

Both teams will wrap up district play on Friday at 7 p.m. Warren East will host Franklin-Simpson, while Warren Central hosts South Warren.
