Under the lights of Houchens-Smith Stadium on the campus of Western Kentucky University, Warren East searched for its first win of the football season. What was scheduled to be the Raiders’ first home game effectively became a neutral site contest against Edmonson County on Friday night. The new field under construction at WEHS was not finished in time for the Wildcats’ visit.

The Raiders found their footing on the turf of Jimmy Feix Field as running backs Patrick Satterfield and Trevor Naftel combined with quarterback Chauncey Greer to lead East to a 41-32 homecoming-night win over Edmonson County.

“Any time we have a chance to win a game with one play, (Satterfield) is going to get (the ball) and everybody knows it,” Raiders coach Justin Chaffin said after the game. “We needed a win. The players needed a win, and I’m proud for them.”

With 1:29 left in the game and his team clinging to a two-point lead, Chaffin called on Satterfield to ice the victory by running a version of the “wildcat” offense with Satterfield lined up in the backfield with Greer split wide with two other receivers. Satterfield carried the ball to the overloaded side despite Edmonson County’s defense crashing down on that side. He slipped through and raced 33 yards to the end zone on fourth-and-2. Eddie Cano booted the extra point kick to give the Raiders a two-possession lead.

East’s coach pointed out that his team has been able to rack up yards thus far this season despite being 0-3 before Friday night, but it had not been able to “ring the bell” and finish drives with touchdowns.

“I am proud of the fact we did ring the bell a little more tonight,” he said.

Edmonson trailed 34-19 entering the fourth quarter, but responded by scoring twice in less than four minutes to get within two points.

The first score came on a 31-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tucker Cole to Brayden Carey with 11:07 showing in the fourth period. A two-point conversion pass from Daniel Caudill was intercepted in the end zone by Greer.

The Wildcats then attempted and recovered an onside kick at East’s 47-yard line. Seven plays afterward, Caudill rushed 10 yards for a touchdown. Brett Brannon added the PAT to set the score at 34-32 with 8:44 left in the game.

Edmonson attempted another onside kick that the Wildcats appeared to recover, but it was ruled the Raiders’ ball. The Wildcats were unable to mount another scoring drive in the game.
