Woodbury group petitions for alcohol sales

A wet/dry vote in January failed to bring alcohol sales to Butler County, but a petition for a wet/dry election in Woodbury might bring sales to the town of 90 people.

Josh Hampton, a member of Citizens for a Better Butler County, submitted a local option petition Friday to the Butler County Clerk’s Office. The petition calls for a vote on package alcohol and restaurant sales, Hampton said.

Butler County Clerk Sherry Johnson said the petition includes 13 names and a request that the election be held Sept. 27. The county judge-executive will decide if the petition is valid and, if so, will set a date for the election.

The 13 names represent nearly 20 percent of Woodbury’s 66 registered voters.

Woodbury Mayor Foy Gabbard signed the petition and said he supports the proposal for the economic boost that alcohol sales could provide for Woodbury.

“It’s a very little town, we operate on very little money and we could use the revenue,” he said.

Woodbury currently has no businesses, Gabbard said, which means establishments wouldn’t start selling alcohol in Woodbury immediately.

“You’re not going to see anything happen quickly, I don’t think,” he said.

While he wants alcohol sales to be legalized in the city, he doesn’t think it will have an earth-shaking impact on the town.

“I buy my beer in Bowling Green and always have, and I’ll continue to do that if it doesn’t pass,” he said.
