Industrial hemp mistaken for pot grow operation

South Central Kentucky Drug Task Force detectives were alerted to a possible large marijuana grow inside a greenhouse in Logan County just south of Adairville near the Tennessee line Thursday afternoon.

Detectives saw what smelled and appeared to be pot, task force Director Jacky Hunt said.

The plants turned out to be industrial hemp, and the grower was properly permitted by the state to grow 10 acres of the crop to be used for hemp oil, he said.

Hunt would like to encourage any properly permitted hemp growers to make police in their area aware of their presence to avoid losing their crop to an inadvertent police seizure.

“We could have very well cut their whole crop down,” Hunt said.

“It looked just like it. It smelled just like it,” Hunt said of the plants’ similarity to marijuana.
