Bowling Green senior Ryan Hughes followed in his family’s footsteps, and gets to continue his soccer career, after signing to play for Transylvania University on Tuesday.
“I’m definitely excited,” Hughes said. “It’s going to be a good time. Both of my parents went to Transy, so it is kind of an exciting day to continue the legacy that they started. I’m incredibly thankful for everybody that helped me get to this place.”

Hughes said he also considered Sewanee and Washington and Lee University, but Transylvania was the easy choice.
“I kind of grew up around the campus,” Hughes said. “The last 18 years I’ve spent a ton of time (there). I love Lexington. It’s like my second home, basically. They definitely kind of pushed me to go there.”
Hughes played a pivotal role as goalkeeper for the Purples the last three years, including being in net when Bowling Green won its second state title in school history in 2014. Hughes recorded 18 shutouts last season as the Purples advanced to the state semifinals before falling to Henry Clay.
Hughes said he is happy to have his decision behind him.
“The last three weeks have been pretty awful,” Hughes said. “There has been a lot of late nights. To finally have it done, now it is time to finish the last little bit of the year (in high school) and get to work.”
