If your family is in a heating crisis, Community Action might be able to help.

Community Action’s low-income home energy assistance program is being extended until April 30 or until all funds are spent. This program helps low income families pay their heating bills.

Households qualify to apply if they meet the income requirements, are responsible for heating costs and are within four days running out of wood, coal, propane, fuel oil, kerosene or have received a past due notice, said Charity Parrish, the director of planning, program development and communications at Community Action of Southern Kentucky.

To apply, families may go to their local Community Action office, bring their heating bill or verification that their heating is included in their rent, a Social Security card and proof of all household income from the preceding month.

Households must also meet the income guidelines. A person with a gross monthly income under $1,275 is eligible to apply. For each additional family member, add $451, so a family of four with a gross monthly income under $2,628 is eligible as well.

LIHEAP has already assisted more than 4,222 households in 10 counties since Jan. 11. In Warren County alone, they have helped 1,074 households. A voucher is offered to these households and paid directly to their fuel source or utility companies. The Community Action office is located in Warren County on 171 Center St., Bowling Green, KY 42101.

“We encourage people to apply, especially if you’ve never gotten help before and you’re in an economic crisis,” Parrish said. “This might be the little help from having a bigger crisis.”
