Western Kentucky quarterback Brandon Doughty was named Conference USA’s Most Valuable Player for the second straight season Wednesday.
Doughty, a sixth-year senior, is the first player to ever win the award in back-to-back seasons. He’s also one of two players, along with Houston’s Case Keenum, to win it multiple times.
This is the seventh time in the last eight seasons the award has been claimed by a quarterback.
Doughty leads the FBS in completion percentage (71.8), touchdowns (45) and points responsible for (286), while ranking second in passing yards (4,594). He is just the third quarterback in FBS history to have consecutive seasons with 4,000 passing yards and 40 touchdowns.
He ranks 24th in FBS history in career yards and 16th in touchdowns.
Doughty was named the MVP of Saturday’s Conference USA championship game after throwing for 410 yards with four total touchdowns in WKU’s 45-28 win over Southern Miss.
Southern Miss’ Todd Monken won C-USA Coach of the Year after leading the Golden Eagles to the West Division title and a bowl berth.
USM was the nation’s most improved team this year, increasing its win total by six games.
Some thought the award would go to WKU’s Jeff Brohm, who helped the Hilltoppers become the only team in C-USA history to go undefeated all the way through league play, including the championship game.
Brohm would’ve received a $25,000 incentive bonus for the award.
Southern Miss quarterback Nick Mullens won the league’s Offensive Player of the Year award, while Marshall linebacker Evan McKelvey was named Defensive Player of the Year. Herd return man Deandre Reaves was Special Teams Player of the Year.
Freshman of the Year went to Middle Tennessee quarterback Brent Stockstill, and Louisiana Tech quarterback Jeff Driskel won Newcomer of the Year after transferring from Florida.
The awards were voted on by league coaches.
