HILLTOPPER FOCUS: WKU assistants hit road for out-of-state recruiting during bye week

Western Kentucky’s football assistants are putting in the miles this week.

With the Hilltoppers on their bye, most of the program’s coaches are on the road recruiting outside Kentucky.

“We’ve hit a lot of areas inside the state of Kentucky to this point,” WKU coach Jeff Brohm said Wednesday on his weekly radio show. “This is kind of a week we’re using to get out.”

Brohm said WKU has “quite a few” coaches in Florida, a couple in Georgia, a couple in Alabama and secondary coach Mike Cassity at Kansas junior colleges.

At Wednesday’s light practice, WKU used a limited set of coaches who included Brohm, offensive coordinator Tyson Helton, defensive coordinator Nick Holt and tight ends coach Ryan Wallace, who called in plays from Helton.

Most of the other assistants were out recruiting. That almost immediately paid dividends, as defensive ends coach Ken Delgado picked up commitments from a pair of three-star linebackers in Georgia on Wednesday.

“This is the week to get a flight, get out for a couple days, spend some time, see the people we need to see and try to get them on board,” Brohm said.
