Amrit Avula rebounded from some adversity Tuesday to win the Region 4 boys’ singles tennis championship at Kereiakes Park.

Avula, a Bowling Green freshman, dropped the first set 6-1 to Greenwood’s Chris Agro. He battled back in the second set to win 6-2 and then took the tiebreaker 10-3 to clinch his first region title.

“It takes a lot of mental toughness to come back and win the match,” said Avula, the tournament’s top seed. “You just always have to believe, ‘Next point, next point’ and so forth. It’s always about having that mindset and not focusing on the past or worrying about the future.”

Avula was part of a boys’ doubles team at Greenwood that won a title when he was a seventh-grader. He transferred to Bowling Green for high school.
