NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — When asked who’s been recruiting him the hardest recently, Curtis Haywood didn’t hesitate to say “mostly Western Kentucky.”

The three-star wing from Oklahoma has an offer from WKU and said he’s in frequent contact with the staff.

“They said they like my game and like how I play,” Haywood said Thursday at the Nike EYBL Peach Jam Finals. “I’m definitely interested. I really like them, so I’ll keep playing, and we’ll see what happens.”

WKU was the first Division I offer for the 6-foot-4, 187-pound prospect, but he’s since picked up offers from Texas Tech, SMU, Houston, Fresno State, Mercer and Illinois State.

The Toppers remain one of his top options, and he said he’s looking to set up a visit to Bowling Green after Peach Jam.

Haywood talks often with WKU assistant David Boyden, he said, and assistant Shawn Forrest watched him play Thursday with the Athletes First AAU program.

Haywood struggled mightily with his shot in that game, going 5 of 22 from the floor, but he filled up the stat sheet with 12 points, eight rebounds, seven steals and four assists.

“I played all right,” Haywood said. “I could’ve played better. I wasn’t really worried about my shot not falling, because when the game goes, your shot comes, so I was just trying to do everything else to help my team win.”

Haywood plays his prep ball at Mustang High School in Oklahoma. His father, also named Curtis, played professionally in the United States and overseas.

Haywood said his evenly distributed stats Thursday are an accurate indication of the way he tries to play the game.

“I work on it,” he said. “I don’t worry about the scoring. I just try to do everything. I think I’m an all-around player. I try to do everything. I don’t worry about one aspect of my game and enjoy doing it all.”
