Bailey’s 3 TD passes lead Purples past St. Xavier

Bowling Green senior quarterback Deuce Bailey delivered three touchdown passes as the visiting Purples closed out the regular season with a 26-9 win against Louisville St. Xavier on Friday night.

Bowling Green (8-2) opened the scoring with a 25-yard field goal by Braden Widener with 6:50 left in the first quarter, then moved the lead to 5-0 when Brandon Gurley tackled a St. X running back in the end zone for a safety later in the first.

The Purples stretched their lead to 12-0 early in the second quarter on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Bailey to Trevy Barber. After the Tigers connected for a field goal, Bailey delivered another touchdown strike with a 10-yard pass to Jaxen Smith with just 18 seconds left in the first half.

Bailey hooked up with Barber again in the third quarter on a 26-yard touchdown pass that pushed the lead to 26-3, and the Purples held on from there for a 26-9 win – the team’s first against St. X since 2020.

Bowling Green will host Madisonville-North Hopkins in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs this coming Friday.

South Warren 49, Logan County 7

Kayden York scored four touchdowns in the first half to lead visiting South Warren to a 49-7 win against Logan County on Friday.

York tallied touchdown runs of 11, 9 and 21 yards. Then with just 52 seconds left in the first half, York stripped the ball loose from a Cougars receiver and returned the fumble 60 yards for a touchdown to put his team up 42-7 at halftime.

York’s first touchdown run put the Spartans up early, then Bryce Button connected with Jake Carter on a 12-yard touchdown pass to double the lead to 14-0 with 6:37 left in the first. York then scored twice more on TD runs before Button hooked up with Aiden Fant on a 23-yard touchdown strike with 4:23 left in the first half.

Before Fant’s TD, Logan County got its only score when Ridge Holeman’s 81-yard completion to Christian Helle set up a short TD run by Cooper Parker.

The Spartans finished the scoring in the third quarter with a Camden Page 7-yard TD pass to Justin Capps.

South Warren (9-1) will host Apollo in a Class 5A state playoff game and Logan County (4-6) will be on the road at Bardstown in a Class 4A playoff game this coming Friday.

Barren County 30, ACS 22

Daylan Thomas delivered a go-ahead 5-yard touchdown run with less than a minute to play as host Barren County claimed a 30-22 win against Allen County-Scottsville on Friday.

After ACS grabbed an early lead, Thomas scored on a 2-yard run and the Trojans got a two-point conversion to lead 8-7.

A Jackson Morris touchdown run put the visiting Patriots back up 15-8 with 2:28 left in the first half, but Barren quarterback Tate Spillman answered with an 11-yard touchdown run as ACS held a 15-14 halftime lead.

Spillman’s 51-yard interception return pushed the Trojans ahead 22-15 with 2:55 left in the third, but ACS evened the score on Deante Grainger’s TD reception with 11:53 left in the game.

Thomas’ second TD run gave Barren the lead, and the Trojans’ Brey Bewley sealed the win with an interception on the Pats’ ensuing drive.

Barren County (8-2) will be at Henderson County for a Class 6A first-round state playoff game, while ACS (8-2) will host Nelson County in a Class 4A playoff matchup.

Glasgow 27, Somerset 14

Hudson Gumm was 6 of 13 passing for 183 yards and a pair of touchdowns to spark host Glasgow to a 27-14 win against Somerset on Friday.

Jaylen Bradley hauled in a 69-yard TD catch and Kaanan Allen had a 37-yard touchdown reception for the Scotties. Cameron Bulle added 119 yards rushing in the win.

Jared Malagon was 2-for-2 on field-goal attempts.

On defense, Jerrick Martin had two interceptions – including one returned for a touchdown. Trace Smith tallied a team-high 10 tackles and had a sack.

Glasgow (5-5) visits Union County in a Class 3A state playoff game this coming Friday.

Edmonson County 47, Breckinridge County 38

Garrett Lyons and Carter Swihart each tallied a pair of rushing touchdowns as host Edmonson County downed Breckinridge County 47-38 on Friday.

The Wildcats built a 13-0 lead on a 17-yard touchdown reception by Will Saling and a 7-yard TD run by Blayne Deweese and held a 13-8 lead at halftime.

Lyons broke loose for a 24-yard TD run, then had a 25-yard touchdown run that stretched the lead to 27-8 with 9:16 left in the third. Jake Coy chipped in with a 25-yard fumble return for a touchdown, then Swihart tallied touchdown runs of 1 and 3 yards.

Edmonson County (6-4) is at Murray in the Class 2A state playoffs this coming Friday.

Paducah Tilghman 41, Russellville 0

Visiting Paducah Tilghman blanked Russellville 41-0 on Friday.

The Panthers’ Jerius Coleman tallied two interceptions and Tiron Garvin added another, while Justin Bigbee tallied a team-high nine tackles and a sack, and Samuel Edge added seven stops and a sack.

Quarterback Hunter Hallman was 12 of 30 passing for 82 yards for Russellville (5-5), which hosts Bethlehem in a Class A state playoff game this coming Friday.
