State championship trophies seem to be drawn to Bowling Green High School of late.

The BGHS boys’ soccer team added to the Purples’ hardware Saturday with a state title victory over Scott at Henry Clay High School in Lexington.

The Purples made it a nailbiter for the fans – and surely the coaching staff – by storming back from a 3-1 deficit to take the championship. BGHS had four goals in the second half in what was the highest scoring state final in Kentucky history.

Bowling Green High is the only school outside of Lexington and Louisville to earn a boys’ soccer state crown. BG also won a state soccer title in 2006.

Bowling Green coach Craig Widener called Saturday’s contest “probably the craziest game I have ever been a part of.”

Fitting end for the drama of a state title game.

Tournament MVP Exodus Bargblor scored three goals Saturday. He was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Gilio Aviles and Blake Cleary.

Winning a state title in any sport brings lifelong memories to the school, players, coaching staff and fans.

Bowling Green is no stranger to celebrating as the best.

The Purples football team has won three straight state championships in football, and lost only a single game this year.

The football program this season is strong and a state title contender, following up undefeated championship seasons in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Athletics brings more than just wins and losses. Athletes learn discipline and how to work hard to achieve goals, lessons that serve them well their whole lives.

We salute the BGHS soccer team on their accomplishments and congratulate the coaching staff and the school administration for their dedication to excellence.

The Purples had surrendered only three goals the entire postseason before Saturday’s game.

That is a testament to their athletic skills and their dedication to a team goal.

Goals will be a part of these students’ lives beyond education, and the lessons learned on the field will be a blessing to the players as they move on to become productive citizens.

Meanwhile, the memory of being the best will stay with them.

“Winning the state title is a big deal,” Bargblor said. “I can walk everywhere and let everyone know I am a champion.”

Indeed.

Congratulations.
