Spartans beat East 10-0 in season opener

Spartans’ soccer blank Raiders 10-0
The South Warren boys’ soccer team opened the season Monday with a 10-0 district victory at home over Warren East.
Zahid Piric, Randy Geis and Israel Cano each had two goals for the Spartans (1-0, 1-0 District 14). Carlos Ramos, Ermin Cerimovic, Shawn Holcomb and Matthew Bohnlein added one goal apiece.
Daniel Bolster had three assists, and Caleb Mattingly chipped in two. Ramos, Cerimovic, Azer Sabanovic and Ryan Martin tallied one assist each.
South Warren travels to Ohio County at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Warren East (0-1, 0-1) hosts Grayson County at 7 p.m. today.
WEHS routs Franklin-Simpson 10-0
The Warren East girls’ soccer team opened its season Monday with a 10-0 victory at Franklin-Simpson.
Taylor Beals, Dayiaone Bibb and Haley Elrod each scored twice for the Lady Raiders (1-0). Ally Davidson, Haley Eller and Alyssa McNeley scored one goal apiece.
Warren East visits Bowling Green at 6 p.m. today. Franklin-Simpson (0-1), which recorded an own goal, plays at South Warren at 7 p.m. today.
Big Red part of mascot challenge again
Western Kentucky mascot Big Red is one of 16 mascots in the 2014 Capital One Mascot Challenge. Driven by fan voting, the last mascot standing will be named the Capital One National Mascot of the Year at the conclusion of the college football season.
This year’s team represents eight conferences and 14 states, including three defending Capital One Mascot Challenge champions. The 2014 Capital One Mascot Challenge participants include: Aubie of Auburn, Benny Beaver of Oregon State, Big Red of Arkansas, Brutus Buckeye of Ohio State, Buster Bronco of Boise State, Buzz of Georgia Tech, Cocky of South Carolina, Cy of Iowa State, Goldy Gopher of Minnesota, Joe Bruin of UCLA, Otto the Orange of Syracuse, Sparty of Michigan State, Spike of The Citadel, Wilma T. Wildcat of Arizona and Zippy of Akron.
Voting opens at 11 p.m. CDT Monday and will continue weekly through Dec. 7. Voters can visit www.CapitalOneMascots.com for voting information.
The winning school will be awarded a $20,000 scholarship toward its mascot program. Each participating Capital One All-America mascot’s school will also receive $5,000 for its respective mascot program.
