Elizabeth Layson Kirby, 92, passed away Jan. 5, 2014, at Soddy-Daisy Healthcare. 

The Warren County native was born March 17, 1921, a daughter of the late Robert Lee Layson and Agatha Strange Layson. Mrs. Kirby was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Agatha L. Losey Johnson; two brothers, Nathaniel Rochester Layson and Robert Lee Layson Jr.; a niece, Lisa Berry; and two nephews, Raymond Kirby and Douglas Camidge.

Mrs. Kirby was a graduate of Bowling Green Business University, a homemaker, and assisted her husband, Robert V. Kirby, in operating Fairview Shoe Repair Shop. She was a member of Bowling Green Christian Church, served as a Sunday school teacher with Bowling Green Christian Church, Glendale Baptist Church, and was active in organizing and leading Good News Clubs.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home, with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Kirby is survived by two sons, Charles Sumner Kirby (Judy) of Winter Springs, Fla., and Robert Vernon Kirby Jr. (Ashlie) of Bowling Green; two daughters, Donna Elizabeth Kirby Jones (Doug) of Soddy-Daisy, Tenn., and Debra Ann Kirby Firat of Hixson, Tenn.; a brother, Birney Strange Layson of Homestead, Fla.; a sister, Julia Grider Layson Berry (Bill) of McCormick, S.C.; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; eight nephews and six nieces.
