Macy’s: Thousands in cash stolen from stores

Cash was reported stolen from four registers at Macy’s in Greenwood Mall in a crime with similarities to a theft at a Macy’s in Tennessee.
Employees at Macy’s in Greenwood Mall conducted an inventory on several cash registers at the store about 3 p.m. Sunday after learning of a theft of cash at the Macy’s in Nashville’s Rivergate Mall, according to a Bowling Green Police Department report.
All the cash from four registers at the Greenwood Macy’s was missing except for $1 bills and change, the report stated.
“Based on investigation, it appeared that the registers had been accessed using a master key to access the cash drawer,” Officer Marc Kaiser wrote in his report.
The sales manager for Macy’s couldn’t provide an exact time frame for the theft, and security camera footage would be
available to review the following day, according to the report.
Police do not have an exact dollar amount on the theft at the Greenwood Mall store. It is estimated to be more than $1,000, according to BGPD spokesman Officer Ronnie Ward.
The loss prevention manager from the Rivergate Macy’s had contacted the Greenwood Macy’s sales manager on Sunday to inform her that someone had obtained an access key to several cash registers there and had taken several thousand dollars.
Ward said Wednesday that no new information had emerged in the investigation.
It is not uncommon for police to investigate crimes at the mall committed by Nashville-area residents, Ward said.
“We have caught several people from the Nashville area here shoplifting, so it never surprises us when we have someone from the Tennessee area here committing crimes,” Ward said. “Since we’re so close to Nashville, it would not be a surprise.”
In November, city police arrested two Nashville residents in connection with a reported shoplifting incident at the mall.
One of the people arrested, Troy Tyson, hit a city police cruiser as he attempted to drive away from officers trying to stop him, striking BGPD Officer Paul Hogue and driving over his left leg, according to court records.
Tyson pleaded guilty in May to second-degree assault and other charges and is now serving a 12-year prison sentence.
