Western Kentucky senior guard Don McHenry has been named Conference USA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
McHenry earns the weekly honor after helping lead the Hilltoppers to a perfect 2-0 mark on the week, extending the Tops’ win streak to four with victories in seven of the team’s last eight outings.
McHenry’s week was highlighted by a season-high 29-point performance in an 81-76 overtime win over rival Murray State on Saturday. McHenry charted a 4-of-10 shooting clip from beyond the arc and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line, while adding five rebounds and two steals in 32 minutes of action.
With just 38 seconds remaining in overtime and the Tops trailing by a point, McHenry nailed a go-ahead step-back 3-pointer to reclaim a two-point lead in WKU’s favor. McHenry then connected on both shots at the free-throw line to give WKU a four-point cushion with 15 seconds left in the OT period.
The 29-point effort was one point shy of McHenry’s career-best of 30 points, posted last season in a road win over Wright State on Dec. 12, 2023.
Tuesday saw McHenry help the Tops to an 84-60 win over Tennessee State, as the Milwaukee native finished with 18 points off 7-for-13 shooting from the field with four steals, two rebounds and a pair of assists.
McHenry currently leads the Hilltoppers in scoring, averaging 16.5 points per contest with a team-best 20 made 3-pointers. The Hilltopper guard has collected a team-high 21 steals on the season, good for fourth-most in CUSA, and is second on the team in assists with 19.
