Trojans ‘on fire’ as they win title

GLASGOW — The Barren County boys’ basketball team’s title defense provided little drama Thursday night.
The Trojans (24-5) scored 51 second-half points and shot 81.8 percent after halftime against Allen County-Scottsville to earn their second straight District 15 championship with a 75-52 win at BCHS.
“We came out on fire and just kept hitting shots,” junior guard Barrett Billingsley said. “It makes it a lot easier as the point guard. You can pass it to anybody and rely on them to score.”
Both teams advance to the Region 4 Tournament, which begins Monday at E.A. Diddle Arena. The tournament draw will take place Saturday night at Greenwood High School after the District 14 title game.
Barren County and ACS have met 10 times since 1990 in the District 15 championship, but the Patriots (15-16) had won the last four meetings with the title on the line before Thursday.
ACS, which last won the district title in 2010, has lost three times by double digits to the Trojans this season.
“We had a similar game plan to what we did against Monroe County (on Monday),” ACS coach James Willett said. “We wanted to slow it down and limit their possessions. … In the second half, that changes the whole game plan when you want to go zone, and everybody seems to be making shots.
“We knew that us having to go to man-to-man played into their hands.”
Thursday’s championship didn’t carry the same tension as last year, when Barren County needed a buzzer-beating 3-pointer in overtime by guard Jaucoby Poore to upend Glasgow for the district crown.
Four players scored in double figures for the Trojans, who made 18 of 22 shots in the second half, including 16 of 17 shots from inside the 3-point line.
Senior guard Dalton Bush led the way with 16 point and 10 rebounds, followed by Billingsley (14 points), Poore (12) and senior guard Clay Simmons (12).
“That’s probably one of our highest percentages this year,” Bush said. “Shots were falling, and we just had a great game. We’ve been here in this situation. We don’t have a lot of size on us, but we know we can pull through in crunch time.”
Barren County didn’t have a sharp practice Wednesday, coach Warren Cunningham said. He asked Bush what the problem was, and the senior’s response was simple.
“He said, ‘We just want to play,’ ” Cunningham said. “We cut practice off early and got out. I trust them when they tell me that because they’ve been there. They were ready to play.”
Bush backed up his words with a fast start, knocking down two 3s in the first three minutes of the game.
The Trojans shot 40.9 percent in the first half, but they held ACS to 17.6 percent to build a 24-15 lead at the break. The Patriots stayed in it by netting 9 of 11 free throws.
Bush started the second half with another 3-pointer, and Simmons scored nine points in the third quarter as Barren County started to pour it on.
Ten players scored for BCHS, which knocked down seven 3-pointers and made 20 of 28 shots from inside the arc.
“You’re not going to shoot that good every night by any means,” Cunningham said. “We struggled a little bit in the first half even though we took good shots. Once you get going, it kind of feeds. Everybody feels that.”
ACS shot 50 percent in the second half and was paced by senior guard Austin Napier’s 11 points. Senior guard Matthew Holder added nine points.
Holder, senior center Austin York and sophomore forward Dyllan Harper were named to the all-tournament team from ACS, along with Poore, Bush, Simmons, Monroe County’s Dillon Geralds and Glasgow’s Quentel Bradley.
The Patriots will try to recharge their batteries this weekend before next week’s region tournament, Willett said.
“We need an offensive practice – just go in and shoot the basketball,” he said. “We need a rinse-out to flush out the system. We might do some competitive things to get their spirits up, but it’s a whole different stage next week. We just need to build them up for that.”
Barren County will also begin its preparation, but the focus on its side will be to convince the Trojans that a district title isn’t the final goal, Cunningham said.
“I told them afterward that tonight’s game doesn’t mean anything next week,” he said. “I don’t believe it has any effect on how you’re going to do next week. You’ve got to be refocused, and hopefully our experience will help us do that.”
