John Oldham

Former WKU Basketball Coach John Oldham, who took the Hilltoppers to a third-place finish in the NCAA tournament in 1971, recently sat down in the studios of WKU-PBS with former WKU Sports Information Director Paul Just to reminisce about his years on the Hill.

Oldham first came to WKU as a student in 1942, having been recruited to play for Coach E. A. Diddle. He left after his freshman season to serve in the U.S. Navy during WWII, and returned in 1946 to complete his undergraduate studies, where he received All-American honors as a Hilltopper. He played professional basketball for two years, and then began his coaching career at College High. He left Bowling Green once again to coach at Tennessee Tech before taking over the helm as head coach of the Hilltoppers when Coach Diddle retired in 1964. Oldham retired from WKU in 1986, having amassed a stellar record throughout a long career as a student, coach and athletic director.
