ECHS softball team advances, 6-0

Junior right-hander Paige Carnes fired a one-hit shutout, striking out 10 batters, as the District 12 champion Edmonson County softball team beat Breckinridge County 6-0 in the first round of the Region 3 Tournament on Monday in Owensboro.

Edmonson County (28-5) did most of its damage in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three runs off Breckinridge County ace Hannah Lee.

The Lady Cats – runners-up in the All “A” Classic state tournament – added a run in the third and two more in the fifth to seal the deal.

Madison Rich and Hannah Clemmons each had a pair of singles to pace a six-hit attack for ECHS.

Sydney Heckman had the only hit of the game for Breckinridge County (11-18).

Owensboro Catholic eliminates Butler County

Liza Brown ripped a bases-loaded, three-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the finishing touches on Owensboro Catholic’s 9-3 conquest of Butler County on Monday in the first round of the Region 3 Tournament in Owensboro.

Butler County pulled within 6-3 with a three-run top of the sixth, but Catholic got those runs back when Brown delivered her two-out, two-strike blow.

Catholic (26-9) jumped on top 1-0 in the bottom of the second when Lindsey Barr singled home Brown, who also had singled.

The Lady Aces pushed across three runs in the third, getting an RBI double from Brittany Murphy and a run-scoring single from Haley James. Another run scored on one of three Butler County errors in the frame.

Hayley Frey’s RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to Murphy made it 6-0 Catholic in the fourth.

Butler County (22-14) battled back in the sixth, getting consecutive RBI doubles from Madeline Drake and Amy Rogers, along with an RBI infield single from Lynsie Clark.

But that was all the Lady Bears would get off winning pitcher Jessica Carmon, who finished with a five-hitter, striking out nine in the complete-game performance.

Daviess County sends ECHS baseball packing

Daviess County dispatched of Edmonson County 4-0 on Monday in the first round of the Region 3 Baseball Tournament in Owensboro.

The Panthers (24-9) did their damage in the second inning. Zack Burton got it started with a one-out single, then Noah Pike and Jacob Nanny were hit by pitches to load the bases. Jed Arend reached on an infield single, which scored a run and John Stratton followed it up with a two-run single. The fourth run came on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Kyle Schneider, which scored Arend.

With an early cushion, Sean Pedley was able to work at ease on the mound. Edmonson County (13-16) threatened a couple times – once in the fourth inning and once in the sixth inning – but for the most part Pedley had little trouble. He struck out seven batters while scattering five hits.
