Kentucky’s school superintendents and other school administrators will gather this week in Bowling Green to look at delivering education in a digital world, safety in schools and education priorities they hope the Kentucky General Assembly will tackle.

The 2 1/2 day Kentucky Association of School Superintendents 2013 Summer Institute at the Sloan Convention Center on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will include a visit by Kentucky Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson and comments from David Cook of the Division of Innovation and Partner Engagement for the Kentucky Department of Education, according to the posted agenda. There are 174 public school districts in Kentucky.

Sessions on Thursday include a keynote address by Mark Edwards titled “Every Child, Every Day: A Framework for Leadership in the Digital World.” Edwards is superintendent of the Mooresville (N.C.) Graded School District and was named 2013 Superintendent of the Year by the National Association of School Administrators, said KASS Executive Director Wilson Sears. Edwards will present four hours of programming on Thursday, Sears said.

On Wednesday, the superintendents will hear from Western Kentucky University President Gary Ransdell; Sears; Carl Rollins, former Kentucky House Education Committee chairman; Abramson; Cook; Kentucky Senate Education Committee Chairman Mike Wilson of Bowling Green; and Jon Akers, executive director for the Kentucky Center for School Safety.

Following the program, there will be a welcome reception sponsored by the WKU College of Education and Behavioral Science and co-sponsored by Ross, Sinclaire and Associates.

Sears said between 80 to 130 attend the Summer Institute, with many of the superintendents’ support staff in attendance on Thursday.

Edwards’ specialty is digital developments in public education. He wrote the book “Every Child Every Day.”
