SKyPAC seeks opening night input

Will the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center’s opening night be one of, “You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em,” or “Carry on my wayward son”?

Country stalwart Kenny Rogers and classic rockers Kansas are among the options listed on a survey in which SKyPAC is asking for feedback on which act community members would like to see when the 1,800-seat facility opens March 10.

Also included on the list is Michael Crawford, Wynonna Judd, Kenny Loggins, Patti LuPone, Aaron Neville, the Oak Ridge Boys, Mandy Patinkin, Bernadette Peters, LeAnn Womack and Manhattan Transfer.

The list is the result of internal brainstorming, as well as speaking with patrons who came through the building on tours, said Dawn McGriff, director of advancement for SKyPAC.

She added that the organization also will be looking at what acts are still available, which acts are within the center’s price range as well as whether the act is willing to play with Orchestra Kentucky on opening night.

Opening night will include a performance by Orchestra Kentucky, which just signed a multiyear agreement to make SKyPAC its home performance center.

“We want to share with area residents that SKyPAC is truly a facility for all types of performers and performances,” Tom Tomlinson, executive director of SKyPAC, said in a statement. “We look forward to announcing additional opening night plans in the coming months.”

SKyPAC is also collecting demographic information through the survey, which is available online through Aug. 30.

McGriff said more is being discussed for opening night and it’s SKyPAC’s goal for the night to represent the community.

“This is a community space,” McGriff said. “A lot of things are under consideration, but not concrete.”

She added the list of possible opening acts is somewhat representative as to what people should expect to see at SKyPAC.

“I think there will be a lot more variety once we get into an actual season,” McGriff said. “I know comedy is being discussed, I think (the opening night list) is really a narrow view of what will be discussed.”

SKyPAC officials did not sign any contracts for a commitment from any of the performers, so the performers may be booked for March 10 by the time the survey is completed, which could limit SKyPAC’s options.

Overall, the facility continues to work toward its opening night. McGriff said they’ll soon be hiring a ticket office manager, as well as announcing the acts as part of the opening mini-season which is expected to run from March 10 through mid-June.

SKyPAC has also expanded its hard hat tours in September. Tours will now take place Monday through Friday at 4 p.m. They still require reservations.
