Deb Kovanda likes to decorate for Christmas, but it isn’t because she wants her home to be the one with the most holiday spirit.
“My mother is in her 80s,” she said. “Last year I decided to make her last few years the best years of Christmas for her. I do it for my mother.”

Kovanda and her husband, Jim, will share their holiday spirit in their Covington Grove Court home with visitors during the Bowling Green Junior Woman’s Club 17th annual Christmas Home Tour. They have various indoor and outdoor decorations, including several Nativity scenes.
“We haven’t done much more (Christmas decorating) than we usually do,” she said. “Outside takes one day, but inside would take a week to get it all done.”
The event will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at six homes and one business. Tickets are $10 in advance and may be purchased at Monticello Bank at 1840 Cave Mill Road, Werner Lowe at 661 U.S. 31-W By-Pass or Manelines Hair Salon at 1406 Magnolia St. Tickets are $12 on the day of the tour and may be purchased at any of the homes or business on the tour.
The Christmas Home Tour not only lets people see decorated homes and get ideas, but also contributes to a good cause. The proceeds go toward $1,000 scholarships to Western Kentucky University, tour committee member Lynn Hulsey said.
“This is the way we raise money for our scholarships for Western. Without this tour, we wouldn’t be able to do it,” she said. “Every year the Woman’s Club picks a deserving student. The scholarships are renewable as long as they meet the requirement.”
Kovanda said this is the first time her house has been on the Christmas Home Tour, but she hasn’t had to worry much about the decorating.
