It will be bluegrass in a barn at an upcoming fund-raising event for the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society.

BarnFest 2004 is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday rain or shine at Chaneys Dairy Barn. Participants should bring lawn chairs. Admission is free, but donations to the Humane Society will be accepted.

Were real excited about it, Dairy Barn owner Carl Chaney said. Weve had so much fun since we opened Oct. 1. We had a band come play here before and everybody loved it. We thought that it would be good to have a music festival.

The festival is also a good way to promote dairy month, which is June, Chaney said.

Were dairy farmers and were proud of it, he said of himself and his wife, Debra.

Featured bands will include Almost Bluegrass, Angie Simmons and Friends, Logan County Grass and Lost River. There will be a tour of the farm for children so they can see how cows are milked. A cow-milking contest between WBVR-FMs Scooter Davis and WBKO-TVs Chris Allen is scheduled for 10 a.m.

Were hoping that Chris wears a suit, Chaney joked.

The idea for a fund-raiser for the Humane Society came because the Chaneys are big animal lovers, said Jean Secrest, vice president of the Humane Society board and sales manager at Insight Communications.

Carl wanted to help the community, she said. Were the biggest softies in the world when it comes to animals. We want this to become an annual event.

Secrest said some Humane Society animals who need good homes will be at the festival.

Were overloaded especially with cats and kittens, she said. We could build 100 buildings and not have room for them. It will stay that way until people spay and neuter their pets.

Secrest said most of the donations will probably be used for the Humane Societys Adoption Center, a no-kill shelter that provides a safe environment for homeless animals in Bowling Green and Warren County.

That shelter has no city or county funding, she said.

The event is being sponsored by Bailey, Gibson Buick Pontiac GMC of Glasgow and Hobdy, Dye and Reed of Bowling Green and Scottsville, Whayne Supply of Bowling Green and Hartland Equipment.
