Geez, Storm Bringer, you didn’t have to literally bring storms with you to Bowling Green today, did you? The two heavy rainstorms that preceded tonight’s performance wound up canceling Wha Bah’s Spring Bash, which was to lead into Storm Bringer’s show. But I must say it all seemed to fit the aura of the event as the band did indeed bring it. I haven’t seen Stormbringer in better form, and the sound they made matched the boom of the thunder outside, hours before (yes they were loud).
Tony Lindsey’s vocals were right on, hitting all the highs and lows. Eddie Vincent reigned supreme over the keyboards (he used several) and did some excellent vocals as well. Joe Parker (bass) and Fenner Castner (drums) provided a lot of that boom mentioned above. And Tom Tutino was on fire on lead guitar. This band was one tight unit tonight.
The sets included gems from the annals of classic rock history. Some of these tunes are so deep that you never hear anyone else playing them (at least not in Bowling Green). Some outstanding examples were Uriah Heep’s “Easy Living”, Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” (with Parker on vocals), Head East’s “Never Been Any Reason” (with the expansive keyboard breaks covered well by Vincent), Kansas’ “Carry On Wayward Son”, Elton John’s “Love Lies Bleeding” with the full intro (now when’s the last time you heard anyone cover this?), and Focus’ “Hocus Pocus” (they save their voices by ingeniously doing the yodeling with instrumentation).
I couldn’t stay for the end of this night, but I hear an encore was called for. From all I did hear, no surprise there. Get out and see them next time and get your rock on.
