Three area counties will benefit from $1.75 million in grant funding announced Friday for use in cleaning up illegal dumps.

Warren County will receive $94,375 from the Kentucky Pride Fund composed of tipping fees at landfills, according to the state.

Logan County will receive $6,433 and Hart County will receive $56,854.

The grants generally require a 25 percent local match, but that can be waived if the individual project costs more than $50,000.

Warren County’s Environment Planning and Assistance Coordinator Stan Reagan said that’s about $24,000 the county will have to pay out for illegal dumps that shouldn’t have been there to begin with.

Reagan says while he hasn’t gotten the grant award letter, he has already received the check for more than $94,000. Most of the projects will be contracted.

The county has 13 dumps listed for cleanup, with the largest one on Old Barren River Road near Limestone Lake in the city limits. The property has a burned-out garage and house and a sinkhole behind it that has about 800 tires and “all kinds of other junk,” Reagan said.

“The city has issued the property owner (a notice of violation) and I think they are going to tear down the buildings and we are going to help clean up the dump,” he said.

The cleanup cost is estimated at $37,000.

Another substantial dumpsite is off Luther-Lawrence Road, where it appears a cave collapsed and had farm debris and community dumping for years. Reagan said that would cost about $23,000 to clean up. It will cost about $18,000 to clean up a collapsed sinkhole on Ewing Ford Road.

The other dumpsites are spread out across the county, Reagan said.
