At a time when many people are unemployed and scrambling to find jobs, the announcement that a new company is coming to Bowling Green and bringing 60 jobs with it is welcome indeed.

Shiloh Inc., based in Ohio, announced Wednesday that it will locate a new manufacturing plant in an existing spec building at the Kentucky TriModal Transpark.

By April, Shiloh Industries will be up and running and providing steel blanks for the automotive industry in its new 81,000-square-foot facility.

The company is making a $9.9 million investment in the site.

This is wonderful news for the transpark, which has brought several new businesses and jobs to Bowling Green. Many of the jobs with Shiloh will be filled locally and a few will come from Ohio.

Shiloh will join several businesses already located there. The transpark is home to Magna’s Bowling Green Metal Forming, Ky Howa, Cannon Automotive (Electromac), the Bowling Green Technical College, the Warren County Education Technology Center and Green River Regional Education Cooperative, and with the addition of Shiloh Industries, includes over 1,300 jobs, with some of those manufacturers currently hiring additional employees.

The total capital investment for industry in the transpark totals more than $246 million. Over the past five years, Bowling Green city government has collected from $1.5 million to $2 million in occupational taxes from the transpark.

More announcements like the one Wednesday need to follow so that debt service on the transpark can be accommodated without taxpayer exposure.

Kentucky’s job incentive program, combined with the existence of an industrial building shell and southern hospitality were all huge factors in luring Shiloh here.

Although 60 jobs may not seem like that many to some people, during these hard times it is huge.

Gov. Steve Beshear said about the 60 jobs: “That represents 60 families who will have the security of knowing they can provide for their families.”
