Louisvilles Simpson named to NSCS

Zachary Richard Simpson of Bowling Green has accepted membership in The National Society of Collegiate Scholars and will be honored during a campus ceremony this fall at University of Louisville.

Simpson, the son of Connie and Richard Simpson of Bowling Green, is a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta, the University of Louisvilles Premedical Honor Society, and holds the office of vice president. As a member of Sigma Chi social fraternity, he was selected from 307 applicants to participate in the Sigma Chi Foundation Horizons Program. The professionally developed leadership experience will occur this summer in the mountains of Snowbird, Utah. He holds the office of secretary of his Sigma Chi chapter.

Simpson, a 2002 graduate of Bowling Green High School, will be a junior at University of Louisville majoring in biology.

NSCS is a highly selective, national, non-profit honors organization. Founded in 1994, it recognizes first and second year undergraduate students who excel academically.

Home school group hosting info meeting

The Barren River Home School Association will host an informational meeting for families who will begin home-schooling their children this fall.

The meeting will be for interested parents at 6:30 p.m. July 29 at the Bowling Green Public Library. For more information, phone Debbie Fox at 393-8817.

Sowell earns science degree from Kentucky

Kellie Sowell, daughter of Ron and Dr. Debra Sowell, received a bachelor of science degree from University of Kentuckys Gatton School of Business and Economics on May 8, 2004.

Sowell graduated summa cum laude and had a 4.0 grade-point average in her major of accounting. She also received the Outstanding Senior Award within her major of accounting. She will pursue a master of business administration degree in the fall at UK. She is an intern at the Lexington accounting firm of Dean, Dorton and Ford.

Sowell is a 2000 honor graduate of Bowling Green High School.

BG natives earn money for Murray

Erin Milliken, daughter of Aaron and Jo Evelyn Milliken of Bowling Green, has been awarded the Marvin D. Mills scholarship from Murray State University. This scholarship is available to students with a minimum composite ACT score of 21 who rank in the top 25 percent of their class, or hold a 2.75 grade-point average. These students must also exhibit academic potential and strong leadership abilities in high school, church, their job or a related organization.

Andrea Slaughter, daughter of Miller and Nan Slaughter of Bowling Green, has been awarded the Leadership Award and Honor Scholarship from Murray State University. The Leadership Award is based on contributions in high school activities, church and community service. Recipients must have a minimum 2.75 GPA. The Honor Scholarship recognized students for their numerous achievements in high school, church and the community.

WEHS students win honors at FFA meet

Warren East High School students brought home several awards from the State Future Farmers of America Convention, held June 7-9 in Louisville. Daniel Lowe was state winner in ag sales. Cody Grant was state runner-up in beef production, and Ethan Early was state runner-up in ag mechanics. Warren East students taking third-place awards were Matt Jackson in turfgrass management and Drew Hendrick in poultry production. Kyle Herald was regional finalist in the tobacco essay category. In the speaking contests, Jacob Sensenig was state runner-up in the crops impromptu category. Amanda Moore was regional finalist in the sheep impromptu category.

Basham earns

scholarship to UK

Mandy Basham, daughter of John and Madena Basham of Bowling Green, has been awarded a Provost Kentucky Governors Scholarship to attend the University of Kentucky in fall 2004. She will be majoring in pre-medicine.

Deadline nears for free/reduced lunch

The Warren County school district participates in the National School Breakfast and National School Lunch programs. If you would like to see if your child is eligible for free or reduced-price school meals, please come to the school food service office at 303 Lovers Lane and fill out an application before Aug. 5.

Hanlon graduates from Wheaton College

Sean Paul Hanlon, son of Robert Hanlon and Julie Allen of Bowling Green, graduated summa cum laude May 22 from Wheaton College. He earned a bachelors degree in economics. He has also been elected to the Wheaton chapter Phi Beta Kappa and earned deans list status for the spring 2004 semester.

named to deans list

Anthony Montemayor, son of Sheri and Alex Montemayor of Bowling Green, has been named to the deans list at Simons Rock College of Bard for the spring 2004 semester. To be eligible for this honor, students must earn a grade-point average of at least 3.5, or a semester GPA of 3.3 with grades of B or better in all subjects, while carrying a full class load.

Regional natives

named to honors list

Five southcentral Kentucky natives have been named to the academic honors list for the spring 2004 semester at Campbellsville University. This list recognizes students who achieve a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher for the semester with a course load of at least 12 hours. Local recipients include: Timothy Laine Johnson, Jonathan Edward Lilly and Joseph Goldsmith Sledge, all of Bowling Green; Amy Nicole Potter of Rockfield, and Andrea Lyn Saltsman of Smiths Grove.

Locals make deans list at Bellarmine

Several local students have been named to the deans list at Bellarmine University. To be eligible for this honor, students must earn a 3.5 grade-point average or better. Honorees include: Kathryn Ryan Davis, Jason Fryia, Lauren Marie Morelli and Gary Phillip Walden, all of Bowling Green; and Desiree Danielle Mullen and Lancelot Nathan Mullen, both of Alvaton.

state scholarships

Deborah Ann Jenkins and Michelle Marie Manning, both of Bowling Green, were presented with Kentucky Department for Workforce Investments Education at Work scholarships July 15 in the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort. The department, an agency of the Education Cabinet, gave the $500 scholarships to students pursuing postsecondary education in Kentucky. Jenkins, 28, is studying accounting at Western Kentucky University. Manning, 36, is an applied technology student at Western. Both are customers of the Workforce Investment Act program, funded

Kelley makes deans list at Creighton

Tori Kelley of Bowling Green has been named to the deans list at Creighton University for the spring 2004 semester. To be eligible for this honor, full-time students must earn at least a 3.5 grade-point average.

Lazic graduates

from Case Western

Bozana Lazic of Bowling Green graduated in May from Case Western Reserve University. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in biology and environmental studies.

Schnacke graduates from Wittenberg

Joshua B. Schnacke, son of Stephen and Phyllis Schnacke of Bowling Green, graduated May 15 from Wittenberg University. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in history.

Rigdon makes Phi Kappa Phi at Murray

Damian P. Rigdon, son of Laurie Watson of Bowling Green, has been initiated into the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi at Morehead State University. To be eligible for the organization, students must have been enrolled at MSU for at least one year, be of sound character, be ranked in the top 5 percent of the junior class or the top 10 percent of the senior class, or be a graduate student with an outstanding academic record.

To be named to the deans list, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.6 or higher and must have earned 12 credits or more in that semester, excluding credits earned in pass-fail classes. Some UK colleges require a 3.5 GPA to make the deans list.
