Collaborating to create music is nothing new for Tony Lindsey and Kyle Frederick, they’ve been doing it since they were teenagers. Lindsey and Frederick were members of TyBarc and HiFi, groups which garnered local success as well as regional attention in the late seventies. TyBarc, which also featured Jeff Brooks, Mitchell Plumlee and David Dorris as well as many special guests, took their brand of high energy fusion rock across the South and Southwest and boasted a hit on regional radio. Networks that developed through these groups and others that the members would join afterward became the basis of first private holiday get togethers and later an annual event and nonprofit organization supporting children and the arts. Frederick and Lindsey’s latest project, BoomTemple, will be a featured act when the 11th Jambodian Holiday Bash takes place December 26 and 27 at Wha Bah’s Steelhorse Ranch.
BoomTemple first began with thoughts of reassembling HiFi, the poppier, new wave version of the two older groups. But, in the end BoomTemple became a project whose foundation is the writing and harmonizing of Tony Lindsey and Kyle Frederick with an ever changing cast of supporting artists. Though, after Kevin Lovelace, the duo found a consistent percussionist in Fenner Castner (Jason and the Scorchers). “Fenner is a very important element”, said Frederick. “I was leaving as he came on the scene so I had never played with him before. I am thrilled we found each other.”
David Dorris, cofounder of the SonRhea Foundation, originally served as bassist. After the initial recording sessions, Byron House stepped in to complete their upcoming album and it is Byron who will perform with the group at the 2010 Jambodian Holiday Bash. Chris Carmichael also lent his talents to the album, laying down the string tracks.
Their album, entitled Vaccine is due out in the Spring, though the release of their first cut “Chop” as well as a video for the single will be part of a viral campaign beginning in January. According to Frederick the guitar heavy Chop addresses the question, “what is in the hearts and minds of those who administer justice?” Lindsey’s sons Zach (Mona, The Secret/Von Guarde) and Alex (Nova Coma) perform in the video for Chop on bass and guitar respectively. Their younger sibling, Lucas, an aspiring wrestler also has a cameo in the video. The video was shot in Bowling Green by Yellowberri.
Vaccine was recorded by Marc Owens at High Street Studios. The nine originals were mixed by veteran engineer/producer Rob Feaster (George Harrison, Bruce Springsteen, Genesis, Billy Joel, Crowded House). The majority of the writing of Vaccine was by Kyle Frederick, some from older projects and some new fare. One was cowritten by Frederick and Lovelace.
BoomTemple is already working on their next CD tentatively titled Souljob. As with the first, Frederick describes the lyrical themes in the band’s repertoire as “’picnic on a volcano’ rock songs about the politics of religion and the religion of politics.” Save for special events, BoomTemple plans to concentrate on performing due to the busy schedules of its members. “It’s as much for our satisfaction as anything” said Lindsey, though their publisher intends to concentrate on shopping the music for soundtracks. Castner spoke of the new project saying, “It has been largely a collaborative effort as the songs are still growing at the time of this writing. We’re pretty excited about he direction they’re taking at this time.”
BoomTemple will be among numerous bands featured at this month’s Jambodian Holiday Bash on December 26 and 27. All of the groups have local ties and all but one will perform original music. Monday night is dedicated to the new generations of groups in the local scene, while Sunday continues the reunion tradition of seasoned artists who grew up in the area. Genres covered will vary from alternative folk to heavy blues.
For information call Tony Lindsey at 799-1718 or purchase tickets at Tony Lindsey & Co. or the Great Escape Records and Comics. David Dorris, the organization’s webmaster, has recently created a Facebook page for the SonRhea Foundation which provides instruments to schools for kids who could not otherwise afford to be in band programs. Since the last Bash, SonRhea has provided many instruments to schools from Smiths Grove to BG City Schools including over 30 stringed instruments as well as a variety of percussion instruments and horns.
