John B. Gaines is president of News Publishing LLC, which operates the Daily News. He is chairman of the board of Daily News Broadcasting Co., which operates WKCT-AM and WDNS-FM, and chairman of the board of News Publishing LLC, which is corporate publisher of the Daily News. The newspaper was founded by his grandfather and has remained in the Gaines family since its inception.
Mr. Gaines is a Bowling Green native and has been involved with the Daily News since 1938, becoming publisher in 1947 and continuing in that role until becoming president in 1997.
He attended Western Training School and Western Kentucky University and graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in journalism. He is a member of Sigma Chi social fraternity and the Society of Professional Journalists.
John B. Gaines was a charter member of the Bowling Green-Warren County Jaycees, a former member of the Bowling Green Noon Rotary Club and served as a vestry member for Christ Episcopal Church and was a trustee of the Delafield Committee at Christ Episcopal. He also is a former member of the Calendar Club literary group, was president of the Kentucky Press Association in 1962, a two-time director of the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association, a 32-year member of the board of Trans Financial Bank, a former director of the Bowling Green-Warren County Chamber of Commerce and a 1980 recipient of the Edward M. Templin Memorial Award, which is presented annually by the Lexington Herald Leader to a newspaper person in Kentucky who performs the most outstanding community service.
Gaines is an avid fisherman and hunter.
