The 1999 Southern Kentucky Fair will be a feast of entertainment for the whole family when it opens Sunday at the SOKY Fairgrounds in Lampkin Park, fair organizers say. The fair, which runs through Aug. 21, will feature new events including go-kart races, while keeping old favorites, said Rick Bruce, executive co-chairman. The demolition derbies are a big draw, he said. The pageants are a big draw. The truck and tractor pull is a big draw. We found big draws at the fair that appeal to a vast amount of people. Every night we try to have something thats a big draw. Melanie Young, the fairs pageant chairwoman, said good attendance at the pageants benefits contestants. The older girls do it because they can meet different people, she said. The interview gives them experience for things like job interviews, and they get to speak in front of a crowd. As for the baby pageants, what mom wouldnt want to show off her baby? Young asked. Moms are proud of their pretty babies, she said. Winners of the Miss Teen, Miss SOKY and Little Miss and Mister pageants go on to compete in state competitions. The baby and toddler pageants winners get trophies, sashes and gift certificates. Proceeds from the fair, which is organized by Bowling Green-Warren County Jaycees, benefit good causes, said Star Howard, fair executive co-chairwoman. Proceeds go to take kids on a shopping tour, Bikes for Kids, food baskets, she said. Everything goes back to the community. The fair is a value families can enjoy at a good price, Bruce said. At $8 per person, a family can ride and do everything, he said. We intend to make it the best fair we can make it and hope everyone can attend. Gates at the 1999 SOKY Fair open at 5 p.m. daily starting Sunday with rides opening at 6 p.m. daily starting Monday. Cost is $6 a person Sunday and $8 a person Monday through Aug. 21.
