When Barbara Cary arrived at Fountain Square Park on Wednesday to watch country singer Martina McBride tape her video for the song When God Fearin Women Get the Blues, she really didnt expect star treatment even though people frequently tell the Glasgow woman she looks like the star. Ive been looking like her for about four or five years, said Cary as she stood near the McBrides tour bus parked behind the Capitol Arts Center and waited for the singer to emerge. People would tell me I looked like her, and I didnt even know who she was at first. Cary got a taste of what it must be like to be a star as she waltzed through the crowd of several hundred people gathered for the chance of being in the video or catching a glimpse of McBride. Cameramen and security began surrounded Cary as she walked through the center of the park. I was like, God, get me out of here, Cary said of the experience. People were taking pictures and asking for autographs. One guy handed me this CD and asked me to listen to it. It was fun at first. But she started feeling bad when mothers came up to her asking her to take pictures with their children, said Monica Greer, who works with Cary at Custom Cuts in Glasgow and witnessed the scene. She kept telling them she wasnt her. The false sighting didnt seem to upset the fans, some of whom had been standing outside in the sweltering heat for hours listening to the Concerts in the Park set featuring Lost River Cave Big Band and Ernie Small Blues Band and waiting for McBride. When the dark-haired singer, clad in an orange slip dress and strappy high-heeled sandals, finally came out of her bus to begin the video shoot for God Fearin Women, fans instantly encircled her. It was fabulous. I was thrilled so many people came, McBride said of the crowd turnout. People were incredible. It was a great atmosphere. Amid a group of hundreds of cheering fans holding signs saying You go, girl, I Love You, Martina and Shelby Rides Again a reference to the character in the video McBride lip synched God Fearin Woman and shot several scenes for the video, which will air June 22 on Country Music Television. Other scenes were filmed in Nashville, Tenn. The song, from McBrides greatest hits album to be released in September, tells the story of a woman who goes through a major change, the singer said. She has her last straw and transforms from prim and proper to a sexy, liberated woman, she said. Theres a whole lot going on. Fountain Square Park was chosen for some of the videos scenes because its picturesque, McBride said.(Bowling Green) is nice and close to Nashville, she said. It has a great look and is perfect for the video. While Bowling Green is known mostly for Corvettes, McBride said Mustangs were chosen to be used in the video. Thats just how the song was written, she said. We recorded the song before we did the video. Some Bowling Green residents believe the video will help the city become known for more than just Corvettes. It will be good for our town, said Jessie Hines, a McBride fan who dropped by the shoot shortly after hearing the singer was in town. This is a small town and (the video) puts us on the map. Its good to have a celebrity here. For some members of Bowling Green High Schools cheerleading squad, which was one of a few groups picked to be in the video along with many of the fans who were at the park, the experience was a dream come true. I love it that she came to Bowling Green and asked us because were national (cheerleading) champions, said BGHS junior Courtney Daniel. Its great that the whole town came out to support her and us. BGHS senior Todd Ray agreed. He believes the video can do nothing but good things for Bowling Green and Kentucky.(With this video) we can stop a lot of (negative) assumptions about Kentucky, he said. McBride has an extensive touring schedule this summer. For more information about the schedule or about her, check out her official Web site: martinamcbride.com.
