Bowling Green police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a middle-aged man found today under College Street bridge. The identity of the white man was not known, but he appeared to be in his 40s, was believed to be homeless and was known by other homeless acquaintances as Al.Emergency medical crews responded just after 8 a.m.to a call and found the man lying on his side in the crawl space under College Street bridge on the north side of Barren River. The man had a wound to his left forehead and temple, according to city police Detective Cliff Meeks. Foul play has not been ruled out, Meeks said. Meeks said the injuries could have occurred when the man stood up in the crawl space and bumped his head. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday. Kelly Renfro of Bowling Green was one of two men who greeted police at the scene and said he and another man spent Tuesday night drinking with Al and then slept under the bridge, Renfro said. Renfro and his friend awoke today and went to breakfast, he said. When the two returned they found the third man injured, but breathing, under the bridge. I just seen the blood and we couldnt get him up so we called the ambulance, Renfro said. Renfro and the second man lingered at the scene and answered questions from city police detectives and sergeants who responded to the second body found near the bridge in the past 40 days. Police and rescue workers recovered the body of Paul David Lynch, 43, of Louisville on the rocks near the bridge on May 16. Investigators said the man was homeless, frequented The Salvation Army and may have died from massive internal injuries possibly suffered from a fall. Renfro said he was shaken and disturbed at the death of the man he just had met the night before. He said the three were out drinking until 12:30 a.m. or 1 a.m. and then decided to retreat to the spot under the bridge, where the overhang and thick vegetation is a popular shelter for some and is within walking distance of several bars. Renfro said Al was so intoxicated that he passed out before reaching the bridge. Renfro said he picked him up and carried the man down to the crawl space where the three of them slept.
