FRANKLIN Anna Kirkpatrick had been taking care of three of her grandchildren for seven years while her son, Corey Reed, was recovering from liver failure. Reed, 41, had begun to recover in the last few years and was spending all the time he could with his three children, Caitlynn, 14, Sarah, 12, and Corey, 10. All four died in an accident Monday, along with family friend, O.J. Edison, 16, when Reed lost control of the Ford Expedition he was driving on Gold City Road. The Reed family had been living in California until the last couple of months. Kirkpatrick said the children had been depressed about their fathers condition and their grades were slipping in school. She brought them back to her hometown of Franklin. I let them pick the house, she said. Within two to three weeks, they were all in heaven. All the children quickly made friends. Kirkpatricks house became a meeting place for the Reed children, as well as Edison, Brandon Russell and Jeremy Sublet. Russell and Sublet were also injured in the accident and were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. Russell was released Tuesday morning and Sublet was in surgery this morning. Corey had just beaten all the other children at Lincoln Elementary in a spelling bee. He was such a great little kid, Kirkpatrick said. Corey taught himself to read when he was 4 years old. He loved school, Kirkpatrick said. I dont know what Ill do without him. Big Corey, the Reed familys name for the childrens father, felt more at peace in Franklin than any time in his life, Kirkpatrick said. They were genuinely happy here, said Gary Brown, a family friend from Los Angeles. Family members disagree with the Simpson County Sheriffs Department determination that Corey Reed was driving too fast along the hilly road. He used to be teased for driving too slow, Brown said. The family, which includes several race car drivers who have extensive knowledge of what happens to a vehicle in a crash, believes Corey Reed swerved to miss something, causing him to lose control. Any number of things could have happened, Brown said. Corey Reed was very kid oriented, said his sister, Laura Reed. He would never do anything to put a child in danger, she said. He wasnt a speeder. I drove faster than he did. Citizens First Trust Bank has set up an account to help the Reed family. The family could use the help, Brown said. Donations for the Sublet family can be sent to Franklin-Simpson High School in care of Assistant Principal Tim Schlosser. The Reed family says the community has been a big help, including Gary Crafton, funeral director at Crafton Funeral Home. The four members of the family will be laid to rest today in a special urn. The bodies were cremated and placed into one urn with compartments for each. Corey had a special password on his computer, Brown said. It was allofus. His three children were his world, Laura Reed said. No matter what, he was going to stand with his kids with him, she said. The Reed family is thinking of O.J.s family and praying for Russell and Sublet, Laura Reed said. Were very, very grateful that Brandon was able to walk away, she said. Several churches and other members of the community have also been helpful, Laura Reed said. Shady Grove Baptist Church donated four burial plots for the family. The whole community has been very wonderful, she said. Funeral for Edison will be Saturday at Townsend Grove Baptist Church in Schochoh with burial in the church cemetery.
