Former Kentucky Gov. Louie Nunn urged young Republicans on Saturday afternoon to get involved in public service. If you want to drink the wine, youve got to stomp the grapes, Nunn told the crowd of 42 College Republicans who met at Western Kentucky University for the Kentucky Federation of College Republicans convention. Republican college students from universities across the state attended the two-day event, which featured several notable Republican speakers, including Nunn and gubernatorial candidates Jefferson County Judge-Executive Rebecca Jackson and Kentucky Sens. Virgil Moore of Leitchfield and the former governors son, Steve Nunn of Glasgow, said Holly Lewis, president of Westerns chapter of College Republicans. You have to be a part of whats going on in your community, Louie Nunn said. The elder Nunns public service career began in Barren County. In 1950 I graduated from law school at the University of Louisville. I went back to Barren County to register to vote. I registered Republican, Nunn said. A county clerk at that time advised Nunn that if he registered as a Republican he would never make a living in this town. Shortly thereafter, Nunn became the first Republican elected to serve as county judge-executive in Barren County. From 1967-1971, Nunn was the governor of Kentucky. He worked with the Democratic General Assembly to increase higher education funding and funding for mental health facilities and state parks. Dont let somebody tell you what you cant do, he said. You can do anything you want to do. The Republican party is open to anyone who wants to work. If youre going to be young Republicans, take advantage of every opportunity you have to serve, Nunn said before introducing his son as the next speaker. Steve Nunn fired up the young crowd when he rallied for Kentuckys next governor to be a Republican. We as a Republican party have an opportunity and a great opportunity to elect a Republican governor, Steve Nunn said to applause from the crowd. Weve got to get together and develop a plan that shows the Republican party is for everyone, Steve Nunn said.
