Park edges Concordia

Park (Mo.) Pirates took care of Concordia (Calif.) 2-1 in the first round of the 2002 NAIA Mens Soccer National Championship at Lovers Lane Soccer Complex in Bowling Green on Friday. The game started off slowly, knotted at 0-0 at the half. Each team got off only one shot in the first 45 minutes. It didnt take long in the second half for a team to take the lead. Park jumped on top 1-0 with a goal from junior mid-fielder Almir Lemes scored on an assist from freshman forward Henok Belayneh in the 57th minute. The Pirates scored 14 minutes later on another goal from Lemes, with a combo assist from senior mid-fielder Dave Foster and Belayneh. Concordia finally found the back of the net in the 87th minute, when junior forward Kyle Carroll scored on a Derek Mantey assist. With the loss, the Eagles finish their season 16-5-2. Park improves to 19-1-2, and moves on to the second round to play the third-seeded University of Rio Grande (Ohio) (19-0-1) today. No. 5 Mobile (Ala.) 1, No. 12 Bethel (Ind.) 0, Double OTMobile (Ala.) opened the second day of first round action in exciting fashion, beating Bethel (Ind.) 1-0 in double-overtime. The first half of the game was a defensive battle with the teams getting off a combined five shots. The second half saw more than twice as many shots, 11, but still no goals. Mobile senior goalkeeper Andrew Bayliss recorded five saves throughout the two regulation periods and two overtime periods. Bethel senior keeper Hiram Moreno had seven saves, but came up just a tad short when, in the 108th minute, Mobile senior forward James Gledhills unassisted goal sneaked past him to give the Rams a 1-0 victory. With the loss, the Pilots of Bethel end their season with a 17-4-4 record. The win moves Mobile to 14-4-1 on the year, and advances them to the quarterfinal round where it will meet fourth-seeded Mid-Continent College (Ky.) (18-4-1) at noon today. No. 8 Covenant 2,No. 9 Illinois-Springfield 0Covenant College (Ga.) survived a defensive battle with the ninth-seeded University of Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars, scoring two late goals and winning 2-0 Friday. The battle in this game took place between the two goalkeepers. The teams took a combined 30 shots; the Scots keeper, junior Phillip Bleecker, had five saves without letting the Prairie Stars find the back of the net. Illinois-Springfield keeper Patrick Miller had three saves, but two late goals snaked past him. No. 10 Simon Fraser 1, No. 7 Baker 0The final game of the first round gave Simon Fraser the first upset of the tournament. The 10th-seeded Clan upset the No. 7 Baker (Kan.) Wildcats on Friday in the 2002 NAIA Mens Soccer National Championship at Lovers Lane Soccer Complex. The first half went scoreless as the defenses of both teams sized each other up. Things got interesting in the second half, as one minute into the period Baker sophomore mid-fielder John Trumpp received a red card and forced his team to play a man down for the rest of the game. Soon after the red card, Clan junior forward Kevin Crouch scored the games only goal on junior forward Andrew Corazzas assist. The game ended in a 1-0 score. With the loss, Baker finishes the season with a 14-4-3 record. Simon Fraser advances to the quarterfinals sporting a 14-4-record.
