Spartans, Purples, Trojans set for quarterfinals

Three area high school football teams remain in the hunt for a championship with state playoff quarterfinal games scheduled for Friday.

In Class 5A, South Warren hosts North Bullitt in a 7 p.m. matchup, while Bowling Green hosts Louisville Atherton in a 7 p.m. game. In Class 6A, Barren County will be on the road to face Great Crossing in a 6 p.m. CT game in Georgetown.

South Warren (9-3) rolled to a 35-14 home win last week against Graves County in a Class 5A second-round playoff game. Spartans quarterback Bryce Button was 18-of-26 passing for 228 yards and three touchdowns. Kayden York ran for 107 yards and a touchdown, and Jake Carter tallied five catches for 71 yards and a touchdown in the win. Camden Page added a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

North Bullitt (7-5) earned a 29-28 road win at Grayson County in last week’s second-round game. Caden Dorsey was 4-of-11 passing for 115 yards and a touchdown, with Hunter Puckett also throwing a 38-yard touchdown pass. Jayden Burton had 47 rushing yards and a touchdown to lead the Eagles, with Sam Felix tallying three receptions for 63 yards and a score.

Bowling Green (10-2) returns home after claiming a 27-14 win against Owensboro in last week’s second round. Quarterback Deuce Bailey was 7-of-14 passing for 134 yards and a pair of touchdowns, with Trevy Barber hauling in six catches for 104 yards and a touchdown. Jaxen Smith led the Purples with 92 rushing yards and a score, and Braden Widener connected on a pair of field goals.

Atherton (10-2) topped Louisville Moore 19-6 last week. Du Zye Grundy had 81 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns. and James Allen Briscoe tallied a 46-yard interception return for a touchdown to pace the Ravens.

Barren County (10-2) went on the road to top district rival North Hardin 16-13 last week in a rematch from the regular season, with Barren getting even for the earlier defeat. Quarterback Tate Spillman was 7-of-13 passing for 113 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Daylan Thomas ran for a team-high 47 yards and also had two catches for 27 yards and a touchdown. Jaxson Byrd tallied two interceptions in the win.

Great Crossing (9-3) beat Louisville DuPont Manual 28-21 in last week’s second round. Quarterback Jeremiah Clark was 6-of-16 passing for 139 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Warhawks. Clark also ran for 43 yards and a touchdown. Luke Ballard ran for 107 yards and a score, and added a 69-yard touchdown reception.
