Parrot Heads are bringing a bit of Margaritaville to Bowling Greens less-than-tropical clime. A fan club for Jimmy Buffett, the musician whose very name conjures up images of palm trees and beaches, has formed in Bowling Green. The clubs are first and foremost social, but members do want to give back to the community, said Ron Morehead, human resources manager for LifeSkills Inc. and a Buffett fan who started the Bowling Green club two months ago. The group already has attracted some Parrot Heads, as Buffett fans are known, but Morehead thinks the Bowling Green club could gain a membership of 50 to 100 people and be sanctioned as an official Buffett fan club, he said. Since the first club formed in Atlanta in 1989, more than 135 official Parrot Head clubs including one in Louisville and one in Lexington have spread across the United States. Along with their social activities, club members frequently take up causes often environmental ones and Morehead hopes the Bowling Green club will be able to adopt a park, he said. Members would maintain it, keep it clean and possibly hold events like an all-day concert there, he said. Any money raised would then be given to charity. Because Buffett also is an environmental activist involved in manatee protection in Florida, most Parrot Head clubs also adopt a manatee, Morehead said. The club will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday and the first Thursday of each month at Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar on Scottsville Road. It also will meet at 5:30 p.m. every other Thursday at GoodTymes on U.S. 31-W By-Pass, starting May 4.Plans to charter a bus so club members can attend Buffetts August concert in Cincinnati also are being made, Morehead said.
