The Simpson County Board of Education will hire a new superintendent at 7 p.m. today at a board meeting at the districts central office. Jim Flynn, the current principal of Shelby County High School, will become superintendent, effective July 1.Flynn grew up in Bowling Green, graduated from Bowling Green High School and Western Kentucky University and worked as a teacher, coach and assistant principal of Greenwood High School before going to Shelby County. He said hes happy to be moving back closer to his birthplace. That area of the state is what I consider home, he said. I think its a good match for me. Flynn said he wasnt looking for a superintendent position when the job came open in Simpson County. But, I thought if the right opportunity in that area presented itself, that would be something I would explore, he added. He will replace interim superintendent Ray Hammers, a longtime educator who came out of retirement to fill the job. Hammers, who retired as superintendent of Union County Schools in 1991, has come back in interim capacities in several school systems over the years. He said he will finally stop working when Flynn is hired. Once we get Flynns name on the dotted line tonight, Im going to feel like Ive got it made, Hammers said. If I was able, I might do a flip. Hammers said the committee that hired Flynn was looking for someone consistent and stable. Im hoping this guy will stay for 15 years, he said. And if they call me (in 15 years), Ill be 80 and I wont come back. Meanwhile, Flynn said hes excited about getting started. He said hes excited to get to know members of the community and find out what they need. I look forward to working with the folks in Simpson County to build a common vision, he said.
