NASHVILLE, Tenn. It was beginning to look like the Casey Atwood story early at the BellSouth Mobility 320 yesterday at Nashville Speedway USA, but it was not to be. Atwood started from the pole for the third straight time in Nashville and led the first 60 laps but was unable to keep up his streak of finishing second at his home track. He kept falling back after losing the lead to Owensboro native Jeff Green. Atwood had a case of bad luck the rest of the day as he ended up being black-flagged and finished a lap down in 24th position. According to Atwood, the bad luck started when the sun came out and the track started to warm up. Instead, it would be Randy Lajoies day. LaJoie found his way from a 28th starting position to victory lane by finishing 1.491 seconds in front of second place Mike McLaughlin. We had some good pit stops, said Lajoie. To get into victory lane you have to work together. Atwoods string of bad luck may still be going, but McLaughlin seemed to have cut his with this second place finish. Weve had some bad luck, McLaughlin said. It seemed that when there was a wreck, we were in the middle of it. McLaughlin avoided all the crashes yesterday for his second place finish. The BellSouth 320 was the first chance of the season for the Busch Series drivers to put on a show without interference from Winston Cup drivers. A Cup driver will not win this race, Atwood said after qualifying yesterday. If a Busch Series regular is going to win one of these things, it might as well be me, Lajoie said. The win moved Lajoie into second place in the Busch Series points standing. With the exception of Lajoie and McLaughlin, it was the day of the rookies. The first two finishers were followed by four rookies to close out the top six. Ron Hornady finished third; Kevin Harvick, fourth; Ricky Henrick, fifth and Jay Sauter, sixth. Harvick seemed to be the most impressive of the rookie class. He had to take a provisional to start 40th in the race and worked his way through the field for his fourth place finish. Jeff Purvis, Owensboro native David Green (Jeffs brother), Todd Bodine and Jimmie Johnson rounded out the top ten.Bodines ninth place finish moved him into the points lead. Jeff Green advanced to third place in points with Winston Cup regular Matt Kenseth dropping to fourth.David Green is now fifth in the points race with Ron Hornaday, the top rookie, following in sixth.Atwoods teammate, Kevin Grubb, moved up one spot again this week to take over seventh with his 14th place finish. Winston Cup driver Mark Martin dropped to eighth. Hank Parker and Jason Keller round out the top 10 in the points race.
