WKU Notebook: Dolchan giving Toppers depth

Before fall camp opened, Western Kentucky coach David Elson was concerned about the lack of depth on his offensive line. In an attempt to alleviate that problem, the former defensive coordinator didnt mind stealing from his former group. Redshirt freshman Joe Dolchan was moved from the defensive line to right tackle on the offensive line early in camp, and the move is helping Elson sleep a little better at night. If you want to talk about a surprise, its Joe Dolchan, Elson said. We really like him on the O-line and hes still learning. Hes still a pup as far as physically, but hes going to be a good lineman. Before arriving at Western, Dolchan was an all-state defensive lineman at Calloway County High School in western Kentucky. But the 6-foot-3, 255-pound Dolchan was also named Calloway Countys offensive lineman of the year in his last three years at the school. Preseason camp has already proven the Hilltoppers need offensive line depth. Preseason All-American left tackle Buster Ashley has missed practice time with a knee injury earlier in camp, center Ryan Thomas has been bothered by a back injury, preseason-All-American right tackle Daniel Withrow is battling a shoulder injury and top backup Tyrone Mareko is nursing an ankle injury. Prepare for twoNow that Western Kentucky quarterback Justin Haddix has been named the Hilltoppers starting signal caller, it makes life a little easier on the Union College coaching staff. Because Haddix and WKU quarterbacks Alex Dukes and Blake Ladson have different strengths, it made game-planning a little tricky for Union. Were trying to prepare for both styles, Union coach Tommy Reid said. Were a little blindfolded because I know theyll do some different things offensively, but weve tried to plan for two different attacks. According to Reid, the school located in Barbourville, 90 miles southeast of Haddixs home in Jackson, tried hard to lure Haddix. We recruited him pretty heavily, Reid said. The kid is impressive. Im really happy for him that hes gone over there. I hope he does well, except against us. Dubious historyPlaying a I-AA team such as Western is fairly new ground for Union. The last time the school played a I-AA was in 1999 and it wasnt pretty. Union faced off at Jacksonville State and lost 68-13, en route to an 0-11 season. Jacksonville State didnt fare much better as it went 2-9.
