CAVE CITY Next Tuesday will kick off the time of year when more than double Cave Citys normal population 1,880 turns out for the Floyd Collins Good Ole Days Celebration. But this year, the crowd will also get to celebrate the citys sesquicentennial anniversary. That just happens every 150 years, and Im privileged to be the mayor, said Cave City Mayor Bob Hunt on Tuesday. Cave City has been around a long time. Its seen a lot of good times and a lot of tough times. But its a pretty prosperous little place. Cave Citys Floyd Collins Sesquicentennial Good Ole Days Celebration will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday with a Teen and Miss Pageant at the Cave City Convention Center. Admission is free. The winner of the Miss Pageant will be named Miss Cave City. After a days break, the festival will resume Thursday at 6 p.m. with the Floyd Collins Good Ole Days Parade. During it, the Caverna High School band will play. There will be floats and beauty queens, too. All will travel from Cave City Baptist Church to the convention center. Its one of three parades during the event. For the third year, at 10 a.m. Saturday , there will be a childrens parade in which kids younger than 12 can ride bicycles, toy peddle or motorized vehicles, ponies or tricycles, according to Hunts wife, Linda Hunt, who is a co-chairman of the festival. Children can also walk in the parade which begins at the Visual Display parking lot or be pushed in strollers by parents. Each will carry a helium balloon as they travel behind a surprise cartoon character. Festival volunteer Jennifer Freeman said the event is one of her Good Ole Days favorites. Its awesome to see those balloons coming down Broadway on bicycles and tricycles, she said. Following the parade, on Saturday at 11 a.m., a Pioneer Parade will be held for the first time. The parade, organized by Cave City Police Capt. Danny Coomer, will include citizens dressed in period clothing, lots of horses and cars, tractors and other machines built before 1955.Its just part of a festival that will also include a search for Cave Citys oldest resident and its longest married couple. Other activities include lots of live music, arts and crafts, a bean supper, a talent contest, a womanless beauty pageant, a silent auction, an antique car, truck and street rod show, a karaoke contest, a pet show, bingo and a historical and genealogical exhibit.
