Downtown Duck Drop set for Nov. 25

“As God as my witness, I thought they could fly.”

This is how City of Bowling Green Grants Manager Nick Cook paid tribute to the infamous turkey drop from the TV show “WKRP in Cincinnati” in a video previewing the city’s inaugural Downtown Duck Drop, set to take place the Monday before Thanksgiving.

The duck drop is the first public fundraiser for the city’s A Better BGKY nonprofit. Proceeds raised will go toward Duncan Hines Days 2025.

“This initial public fundraiser was more (to) put a feeler out there, do something a little bit crazy and different, and see how the public reacts,” Downtown Development Coordinator Telia Butler said. “People started buying ducks like hotcakes, and they seem to love it.”

Three hundred rubber ducks are for sale to the public for $5 apiece. The ducks will be dropped at noon out of a Bowling Green Public Works bucket truck on Nov. 25 at The Fringe food truck park.

Butler said ducks can be purchased up until 10 a.m. that morning, and up to 10 can be bought per person.

Ducks poured from the bucket truck will land around a small target. The person whose duck lands nearest to the target will take home a $100 gift card from Houchens Food Group and a gift basket with items from various businesses located downtown.

She said the drop is a way for the city to make Duncan Hines Days an “integral part of living in Bowling Green.”

“That’s why we built a whole Duncan Hines brand that can be versatile, that you can alter and use for other things anytime,” she said.

Downtown BG will broadcast the drop on social media. Butler said the winner of the drop does not need to be present to win.

When the city approached the businesses, Butler said, there was great enthusiasm.

“The downtown businesses thought it was hilarious,” she said. “They latched on to it and were like ‘yes, anytime we can just get people to come downtown to explore, we’re all for it.’ ”

In advance of the Nov. 25 drop, the city filmed a promotional video featuring Cook, Butler and several other city figures along with D93 Morning Show host Tony Rose, and was shared online. Like the event itself, the video paid tribute to the famous scene from WKRP.

Ducks can be purchased online at eventbrite.com.
