Greenwood drops opener at home to Ohio County

Last season Greenwood didnt get off to a good start, recording losses five of which came by five points or less in their first nine games. The bad beginning springboarded the Gators to a disappointing 22-loss season. This year, Greenwood coach Blane Embry wanted his team to get off on the right foot. It appeared the Gators were doing just that as they erupted to a double-digit first-quarter lead at home against Ohio County, only to see it slip away as the Gators fell 63-58 in overtime. In close games it only takes a few buckets here and there. They hit them and we didnt, Embry said. The Gators were eager to get the season started. It was evident from the tipoff, as they rolled out to an early 9-1 lead. Junior guard Tyler Peterie put Greenwood up double digits (16-5) with back-to-back 3-pointers, but the domination was short-lived. Ohio County came storming back in the second quarter with a 12-0 run, which pulled them to within one point (18-17) of the Gators lead. Greenwood got its first field goal of the quarter at 2:33 in, when Aaron Hartz put back a missed shot, making it 20-17. Ohio County took its first lead of the game with less than a minute remaining in the half as Jordan James got a steal and an easy layup to make it a 22-20 Eagles lead. James finished with a game-high 15 points. We were really nervous coming in, Ohio County coach Kyle Estes said. We have four guys that were making their first varsity start. We got down in a situation where we could have ducked our heads and just gave up, but we didnt. Greenwood finished the second quarter having scored just four points. According to Embry, much of the Gators woes were due to poor decisionmaking on the offensive end and plain excellent execution on the part of the Eagles. We were a little immature in our shot selection I thought, especially in the second quarter, Embry said. We got passive and they turned it up. Offensive rebounding allowed Greenwood to get back into the game in the second quarter. The Gators finished the night shooting 23-of-73 from the field but, thanks to 26 offensive rebounds, they were able to get a lot of easy putbacks. Hartz tied the game at 38-38 with a putback late in the third quarter, setting the stage for a dramatic fourth quarter, which saw four ties and three lead changes. Offensive rebounding is a barometer of hustle. We definitely I think blew it out of the water, Embry said. We dont have the gifted scorer to throw the basketball in there to, so we have to get the garbage buckets. Greenwood senior Chris Gomez tied the game at 50 with just 34 seconds in the fourth quarter. The Eagles had an opportunity for the last shot but failed to get one off, sending it into overtime. Ohio County seized control quickly in overtime as Shaun Maiden drained a deep 3 on the Eagles first possession, only to follow it up with a steal on the Gators ensuing trip up the court. Greenwood fell behind early and was unable to recover, despite a pair of 3s from sophomore Chris Keith and Gomez. Its a new year, Embry said. We have new roles, but I loved our effort. They laid it on the line and thats one reason we came back. I dont want us to lose confidence and theres really no reason to after a game like this. Hartz led the Gators with a 14-point, 10-rebound effort. The game was Hartzs first action since his sophomore year. He was unable to play last season after catching pneumonia, and his return did not go unnoticed, especially by the visiting coach. He did an excellent job, Estes said. He put the ball in the hole strong. Hes a very good player.
