Fountain Square Park will look a little dressier at this years Concerts in the Park summer series, which begins June 4.Using part of a Streetscape grant from the states Renaissance Kentucky fund, the Downtown Redevelopment Authority has bought new benches, trash cans and ashtrays for the square that fit better into the areas historic look. Theyll be in place Thursday for a 9 a.m. public bench warming ceremony held on the square: 32 new benches, 24 trash cans and 24 ashtrays. But the real fun will start at noon June 4, when the Ernie Small Blues Band will kick off the 24th year for the Concert in the Park series. Concerts from noon to 1 p.m. will be held Wednesdays throughout June, said Cheryl Blaine, DRA executive director. Attendance at the shows has increased every year, Blaine said, with 1,500 coming to the final evening concert last year. Evening shows began just a few years ago, she said. This year theyll run on Fridays from July 11 to August 1, starting at 6:30 p.m. and lasting until 9 p.m. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. A variety of food will be for sale at the shows. Cambridge Market will serve its regular menu and is also bringing a grill for hamburgers, chicken breasts and quarter-pound hot dogs, Blaine said. Cool Beans Cafe from Franklin will serve ice cream, and a pizza vendor has just been signed, she said. Goose Creek Arts and Crafts will offer childrens activities such as face painting. There will also be a moonwalk attraction, an inflatable room children can jump around in. Before the final noon concert starts July 2, Bowling Green Mayor Sandy Jones and Warren County Judge-Executive Mike Buchanon will conduct a patriot day celebration, Blaine said. The patriotic rally will begin at 11 a.m., she said. Jones said that she and Buchanon will give speeches, offer patriotic tributes and hold a flag ceremony. Those in attendance will be encouraged to wear red, white and blue, she said. BB&T Bank is the primary sponsor of the concert series, and bought the 32 banners now hanging from downtown light poles, advertising the shows, Blaine said. Coca-Cola, Clark Distributing, Scott Waste Services and Insight Communications are also contributors. Noon concerts are sponsored by Sandy Jones; RC Components; and the law firms of Cole & Moore; Reynolds, Johnston, Hinton, Thomas & Pepper; and Bell, Orr, Ayers & Moore. Evening concerts are sponsored by Quality Personnel and the law firm of English, Lucas, Priest & Owsley. Insight will film the concerts and replay them on cable channel 5, Blaine said.
